Strengthening Smoke-free Cities in Thailand: Learning from Philippines's Success.

Bangkok Metropolitan Administration is setting a goal to develop a smoke-free city in all dimensions to protect the health of Bangkok residents and tourists from the dangers of second-hand smoke. This will be achieved by uniting all sectors to tangibly implement policies and establish a robust law enforcement system.
Dr. Worachol Thavornpong, Deputy Director of the City Law Enforcement Department., stated at the host event for the workshop, " Strengthening Smoke-free Cities in Thailand: Learning from Philippines's Success.," that "Bangkok will move forward to become a full-fledged 'Smoke and E-Cigarette Free Metropolis,' establishing this as a safety standard for the capital. This effort aims to elevate the quality of life, especially for children, youth, and families in Bangkok, by protecting them from tobacco and e-cigarette smoke."
Key measures include:
- Creating smoke and e-cigarette-free areas.
- Protecting children and youth from tobacco and e-cigarettes.
- Providing access for the public to quit smoking and using e-cigarettes.
- Driving the smoke and e-cigarette-free city through whole-society cooperation.
The conference was honored by the presence of representatives from Iloilo City, Philippines, 1) Councilor Alan Zaldivar, City Councilor, Chairperson, Iloilo City Committee on Health. Iloilo City, Philippines. And 2) Mr.Inigo D.Garingalao, Executive Director, Iloilo City Anti-Smoking Task Force. Iloilo City, Philippines. The Iloilo City is a model city for managing public health protection from the dangers of tobacco smoke and e-cigarette vapor. Iloilo received the ASEAN Smoke-free Award 2024 Gold Medal from the ASEAN Secretariat.
This event organized by Action on smoking and Health Foundation (ASH), Thailand, Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), Department of Disease Control, Ministry of Public Health and the Southeast Asia Tobacco Control Alliance (SEATCA) supported by ThaiHealth.
