Getting to know Gang Pakdee: Alcohol-Tobacco Free Teens

The group was established with the aim of allowing the youth to take a leading roll in monitoring online media activities of both alcohol and tobacco industry.  It is also served as a platform for youth to build an online connection in order to create more awareness among the online community.

Prof. Prakit Vathesatogkit, from ASH Thailand said that currently the tobacco and alcohol industries are very active in term of spending millions of dollars on Cooperate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs.  However, if we look closely at the objective of these CSR activities, we will see that the industries are no saint. As quote saying by an executives of Philip Morris International “We never use the word “Donation”, and we never invest in anything that we do not expect profits”.

Jiraporn Kamolrungsan, leader of Gang Pakdee talked about the history of the project, saying that, nowadays, all sort of tactics from the tobacco and alcohol companies is constantly harassing youth.  The CSR programs are sophisticatedly designed to manipulate the community into thinking that the industries are trying to improve their lives, but their true colour is still questionable.  Apart from CSR programs, the industries also pay large amount of money in variety of commercial projects.  However, those media are design to do one thing, which is to manipulate youth into trying their products.  Gang Pakdee is the latest effort that will give youth a mechanism to stay clear from any industries’ tactics.
